Youth Hostile London
For many of the people in Singapore, the 2010 inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is more than an opportunity to encourage youth sports. It is a chance to showcase and reinvent their home as an "interesting and livable city," according to Goh Chok Tong, the current senior minister and former prime minister.
"Our hosting of the inaugural YOG must be seen against our desire to take Singapore to the next stage as a vibrant and fun place," Goh said in a speech when the YOG torch was unveiled in March 2010. "We have grown our economy and rejuvenated Singapore’s physical landscape. We must now go beyond hard infrastructure to create the soft environment of a most liveable and bustling global city."
The Youth Olympic Games will be held Aug. 14-26, 2010 in Singapore. At the YOG, about 3,500 athletes 14-18 years old will compete in 26 youth sports. The sports are the same 26 sports which will be contested in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, although some disciplines were not included in the youth sports program. More than 205 countries will compete in the Youth Olympic Games.
